Residents around the Mar Menor are raising alarms as issues of illegal boat anchoring, loud parties, and speeding jet skis escalate. On July second, the Cartagena Maritime Authority issued thirty-two sanctions in just a single day. Locals report heavy disturbances, with one resident describing activities on Isla Ciervo as abusive and potentially damaging to the area’s environment.

Although social gatherings on the water are permitted with prior authorisation and insurance, many are taking place without the required permits. According to Captain Villar, the situation is becoming uncontrollable, as the existing resources are insufficient for constant surveillance. To address these issues, he proposed establishing a guard station, similar to those in other protected regions.

The Mar Menor is not the only area affected, with illegal vessels also spotted near La Isla beach in Mazarrón and the Hornillo area in Águilas. The maritime captain has reported a dramatic increase of nearly one hundred fifty-five percent in jet ski registrations since last year, raising concerns over water safety and compliance with speed limits in shallow areas.

In response, the town council is actively seeking solutions, hoping to implement alternative deterrents to traditional jellyfish nets that could provide a more effective long-term strategy to mitigate these pressing concerns in the Mar Menor.
