The Ayuntamiento de Torrevieja has officially opened a new children’s sports court in Plaza de Oriente this weekend. The facility, constructed at a cost of one hundred sixty-nine thousand euros, faced significant delays and criticism regarding its aesthetics, particularly its proximity to the Sagrado Corazón church. This marks a notable addition to the community, aiming to provide local children with a dedicated space to play.

On its opening day, the court was reported to be busy, fulfilling the Ayuntamiento’s aim of providing a recreational area to help reduce disturbances caused by ball games in nearby establishments. Rules for use have been put in place, including a maximum age limit of fourteen, with prohibitions on scooters, vaping, food, and glass containers. Despite these regulations, early reports indicate that many users are already disregarding them.

The facility has also coincided with preparations for local festivities dedicated to the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Recent improvements in the area, such as lighting and new benches funded by European grants, have complemented the opening of the sports court. These benches, planned as part of a larger public space renovation, are expected to enhance the overall environment.

In addition to the sports court, residents have noted improvements in local park upkeep, with new soil placed around olive trees providing some much-needed shade. Despite its challenges, the opening of the sports court represents a positive step for community development in Torrevieja.
