The Public Health Councillor of Torrevieja, Rosa Cañón, recently introduced the ‘Skin Guardians’ campaign, aimed at heightening awareness around skin cancer. A significant event is scheduled for Saturday, thirty-first May, from ten in the morning to two in the afternoon, at La Mata beach on Avenida de los Europeos. This initiative is organised in conjunction with the Spanish Cancer Patients’ Group, known as GEPAC, to precede World Skin Cancer Day on thirteenth June.

During the event, a tent will be set up at the beach where dermatologists, led by GEPAC’s manager, Marcos Martínez, will offer valuable information and conduct skin screenings for all attendees. They will underscore the vital role of sun protection and outreach efforts in preventing skin cancer. This initiative aims to educate the public on the importance of early detection.

In addition to screenings, attendees can enjoy Zumba classes instructed by Verónica Pedrosa and her team of trainers. Pedrosa emphasised the need to come prepared with sun protection, water, a hat, and enthusiasm for physical activity.

Councillor Cañón highlighted the significance of early detection, noting that eighty-six per cent of the melanomas diagnosed in individuals can be treated and cured effectively. This campaign thus plays a crucial role in combating skin cancer in the community, encouraging proactive health measures among residents.
