A fifty-three-year-old woman has been arrested in Elche, Alicante, by the National Police following the false report of a robbery with violence. The woman claimed that a cyclist snatched her handbag while passing her at high speed. She also provided police with documentation of credit card transactions she alleged had been made by the thief using her stolen card.

Investigators launched an inquiry and discovered multiple inconsistencies in her story. Notably, they found that fraudulent transactions were made at the same bar where she had been at the time of the alleged robbery, raising doubts about her account. The police deemed it highly unlikely that both the suspect and the supposed victim would be in the same place immediately after the crime.

Further checks revealed that the woman had also sought compensation from her insurance for the claimed theft amount, which pointed to potential ulterior motives. Consequently, police arrested her for simulating a crime and fraud. Following the necessary legal processes, she has been presented before the local courts in Elche.

The National Police’s statement highlights that filing a false report is a criminal act that carries legal penalties. They stressed the importance of responsible conduct and encouraged individuals to provide accurate information when reporting crimes to ensure effective investigations and protect genuine victims.
