The Traffic Division of the Civil Guard in the Murcia Region is deploying one hundred and sixteen officers to oversee traffic during the upcoming May bank holiday. The special operation, named Operation Special First of May, commences at three PM today and will continue until midnight on Sunday, the fourth of May. This initiative responds to expected high travel volumes, with around three hundred and sixty-five thousand vehicles anticipated on local roads.

Virginia Jerez, the Provincial Chief of Traffic, emphasised the importance of prudence and responsibility for drivers. She advised motorists to adequately check their vehicles prior to travel and to stay informed about road conditions along their routes. Jerez’s message aims to reduce accidents by promoting safer driving behaviours.

Drivers are reminded to adhere to traffic regulations such as respecting speed limits, wearing seat belts, and using child safety systems regardless of the road type. Jerez highlighted that thirty percent of road fatalities this year on interurban roads involved victims who were not wearing seat belts, despite the legal requirement.

Finally, authorities reiterate a zero tolerance policy for alcohol and drug consumption while driving, underscoring the need for safer roads during this busy period. The public is encouraged to travel responsibly and keep safety as the top priority.
