Terra Natura Murcia has expanded the range of species at its park with the arrival of the Murcian hen, a native breed exclusive to the Region. One male and six females have been introduced and can now be seen at La Granja de Tommy.

The Murcian hen is closely linked to the area’s agricultural history and livestock traditions. Park officials say its presence will help raise awareness of a little-known breed and underline the importance of preserving domestic species that form part of the local heritage.

The initiative has been developed in collaboration with the Association of Murcian Hen Breeders, AGAMUR, and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena. Both organisations are actively involved in recovering and promoting the species, reinforcing efforts to guarantee its long-term survival.

The breed will now feature in the park’s educational activities, including school talks and dedicated sessions organised with AGAMUR. The park’s director, Gustavo Martínez, has said the addition helps protect a traditional regional animal and supports its continued development to prevent extinction.
