Orihuela council has confirmed that from Friday 17 April 2026 the traditional Tuesday and Friday street market will be temporarily relocated to the surroundings of Plaza de la Trinidad. The move is due to ongoing renovation works in the areas of Plaza de la Soledad and Teniente Linares.

Opposition group Cambiemos has criticised the decision by the Markets Department, arguing that it was taken unilaterally and communicated to traders with only a few days’ notice. The party claims the lack of consultation shows disregard for the stallholders who depend on the market for their livelihood.

The market has already been moved several times in recent years. Its last relocation was from the Paseo, with a promise it would return once redevelopment works were completed, including adapted spaces for stalls. Since then, it has operated at the start of Calle Mayor, next to Plaza Ramón Sijé.

Councillor Quique Montero has described the latest move as further evidence of what he called directionless management. He has urged the council to open a genuine dialogue with traders before making further changes, warning that continued disruption could lead to the market’s gradual decline.
