A 73-year-old man is under investigation after four cyclists were struck by a car on the CV-925 near Orihuela in Alicante province. The incident happened at around 3.50pm on Wednesday at kilometre nine of the road.
Three of the cyclists, aged between 56 and 68, were seriously injured. Two were taken to Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela with multiple injuries, while another was transferred to Vinalopó Hospital in Elche with a head injury, according to the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre.
The Guardia Civil is considering possible charges of dangerous driving and could pursue a charge of manslaughter, depending on how the victims’ conditions develop.
Officers have indicated that the driver’s vehicle had allegedly been modified to accommodate a disability but did not have the required official approval. Two SAMU ambulances, a basic life support unit and a non-assisted transport unit attended the scene on the Torremendo road.
