A five-month-old baby who was seriously injured in a dog attack in Abanilla, Murcia, remains in hospital and is said to be making good clinical progress. The infant was transferred to Doctor Balmis Hospital in Alicante after the incident last Saturday.

The attack took place on a private plot in the rural hamlet of Cañada de la Leña, near the border with Alicante. The baby was in a pushchair when a loose rottweiler ran towards her and bit her on the head. Adults at the scene called emergency services, and she was first taken to a health centre in Pinoso before being airlifted by medical helicopter to Alicante.

The dog belongs to a neighbour who is understood to be a friend of the child’s parents. The animal has been placed in quarantine for at least 15 days, in line with regulations, and veterinary checks have confirmed that its vaccinations are up to date.

The Guardia Civil is investigating the circumstances of the attack and will determine whether the owner bears any responsibility. Officers have confirmed that the dog was on private property and the owner has not been arrested. He is said to have cooperated fully with the investigation.
