A 17-year-old girl has died at Dénia Hospital after developing symptoms compatible with meningitis, the Valencian regional Health Department has confirmed.
The teenager was transferred by ambulance from a nearby town in the Marina Alta area and died a few hours later. Although microbiological analysis is still pending to confirm the exact cause, health officials believe the clinical picture is consistent with meningitis.
As a precaution, the Generalitat’s Public Health service has activated the established protocol. Teams are contacting the young woman’s close circle and tracing her recent contacts in order to provide chemoprophylaxis where necessary.
The Health Department has reminded the public that meningitis is mainly transmitted through respiratory secretions, including coughing, sneezing and kissing. Officials say rapid identification of close contacts is key to preventing further cases.
