The mother of three-year-old Ainhara, who was killed by her father in Torrevieja, had gone to the Guardia Civil hours before the deaths to report threats and express fears for her daughter’s safety. She told officers her former partner had threatened to harm the child if she continued a new relationship and said she had not heard from either of them since earlier that day.

Officers went to the property and discovered the bodies of the father and daughter in the garage. Both had died by hanging. Investigators believe the girl was killed before her father took his own life. Neighbours reported hearing the child and her father at the home earlier that day.

On Monday, institutions across the Valencian Community observed minutes of silence in memory of Ainhara and in condemnation of gender-based and vicarious violence. Government delegate Pilar Bernabé expressed solidarity with the families and urged united political support for proposed legislation targeting vicarious violence.

The Ministry of Equality has confirmed the Torrevieja case as the third vicarious violence killing of 2026. So far this year, 14 women have been killed in gender-based violence in Spain, and three children have died in cases of vicarious violence.
