Torrevieja’s Municipal Animal Shelter arranged almost 300 adoptions during 2025, according to a yearly balance presented by Animal Protection councillor Concha Sala. In total, 201 cats and 84 dogs found new homes.

The shelter also processed 139 abandonment decrees, involving 69 dogs and 70 cats. It is the first year the municipality has applied local and national legislation in these cases, although most fines have not yet been enforced. In addition, 750 animals were sterilised, including 88 dogs and 662 cats from feline colonies and the shelter itself.

A total of 476 cats were taken in due to loss, accidents or other circumstances. Of these, 21 were reunited with their families, while 84 animals died, mainly as a result of road accidents or illness. The council also handled 54 responsible ownership requirements and worked with Local Police on further enforcement actions.

Councillor Sala thanked staff, volunteers and local animal associations for what she described as a significant daily effort to protect animal welfare throughout the year.
