Residents in the Benimar urbanisation, located between Benijófar and Rojales, have publicly complained about chickens roaming freely through streets and public spaces. They say they have submitted formal complaints to Benijófar Town Hall for months but no effective measures have been taken.

Neighbours argue the situation presents risks to road safety, public health and animal welfare. The birds frequently cross roads, forcing drivers to brake or swerve. Residents also report incidents of dogs chasing the chickens, increasing the potential danger for pedestrians and children, particularly around the Canada Marsa park, which includes both a children’s playground and a popular dog park.

Some residents believe the situation may breach national legislation, including Law 7/2023 on animal welfare, which states that animals must not roam unsupervised in public spaces. They also point to Royal Decree 637/2021, which requires poultry holdings to be registered with the General Register of Livestock Farms (REGA) and to follow biosecurity measures, especially in light of avian influenza risks.

Residents say their main concern is day-to-day safety and are calling on the authorities to act quickly to control or remove the animals. They claim that, despite repeated reports — and alleged emails from Rojales Town Hall — the issue remains unresolved.
