Guardamar del Segura Council has launched a new system to monitor coastal dynamics and study beach erosion through the installation of a network of sensors along its shoreline.

The technology includes a current meter, several oceanographic buoys and coastal video monitoring systems. The network gathers high-resolution in situ data on hydrodynamic behaviour in the surf zone, where most sediment movement caused by waves takes place.

According to the council, continuous data collection will help identify patterns in marine sediment movement, supporting the development of predictive models and decision-making tools. The instrumentation also provides direct information from the coastal front, reducing the need to rely solely on numerical propagation models to estimate shoreline conditions.

The project has been funded with 82,728.20 euros from EU Next Generation funds through the Sustainable Tourism Plan. It was developed with technical advice from the Coastal Ecology Institute, and installation was carried out by the specialist company Oceannet.
