The mayors of Elche and Torrevieja have agreed to request a joint meeting with the Ministry of Transport to push for long-awaited infrastructure upgrades. Pablo Ruz welcomed Eduardo Dolón to Elche Town Hall on Tuesday for talks focused on strengthening cooperation and improving strategic connections across the province.

Following the meeting, both councils confirmed they will formally seek talks with the ministry to clarify timelines and investment plans. They want improvements to rail services, stronger direct links between Elche and Torrevieja, and firm progress on the proposed Tram connecting the Vega Baja with Elche, Alicante and the airport.

Mr Ruz described Torrevieja as a “sister city” and stressed that modern, efficient infrastructure is vital for economic growth. Mr Dolón highlighted the historic, educational and economic ties between the two municipalities, as well as their shared reliance on tourism, sport and the service sector.

During the visit, the Torrevieja mayor signed Elche’s book of honour and received a miniature replica of the Lady of Elche. The event concluded with the dedication of a palm tree in Elche’s Municipal Park, symbolising closer ties between the two cities.
