A man has been injured after falling around three metres into an open grave at Torrevieja cemetery in Alicante, according to the Provincial Firefighters Consortium.
The incident happened at about 10:20am on Saturday while he was carrying out maintenance work on a headstone. He fell into the grave shaft from an estimated height of three metres.
Fire crews were called to the scene and deployed a ladder into the grave to reach him. He was then secured and lifted out using a vacuum mattress to prevent further injury.
Emergency services confirmed that the man did not lose consciousness or mobility, although he complained of severe back pain. He was transferred to hospital shortly after 11:30am for further assessment and treatment.
