Hundreds of people gathered in Torrevieja’s Plaza de la Constitución yesterday to mark four years since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The event brought together mainly members of the local Ukrainian community, alongside residents who stopped to show their support.

The commemoration included speeches, floral tributes and a minute’s silence in memory of those killed, both military personnel and civilians. Speakers reflected on four years of loss, destruction and displacement, but also stressed their determination not to give up Ukraine’s freedom, sovereignty and national identity.

Many families who fled the conflict have settled in Spain, with Torrevieja becoming a place of refuge and stability for some. Participants expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by the town and highlighted a renewed sense of unity and national awareness among Ukrainians.

Although the conflict remains unresolved, those attending said their commitment to peace, dignity and democratic values remains strong. The gathering also underscored Torrevieja’s reputation as a diverse and supportive community.
