After years of neglect, the former Las Velas shopping centre in Los Narejos is being transformed and will reopen this summer as the Mar Menor Leisure Centre.

Murcian businessman Enrique Roca, main sponsor of Real Murcia CF, bought the property two years ago with the aim of bringing it back to life. The project faced delays due to legal disputes with the previous owner, but work is now well underway. Centre manager Miguel Ángel Canales said the first priority was to overhaul safety and protection systems, repair leaks and modernise the building.

The 14,000 square metre complex includes around 25 retail units, a former nightclub and six cinema screens with 100 seats each. The cinemas are expected to be among the first areas to reopen, with negotiations already taking place with operators. Plans also include new entrances from Avenida de Los Narejos and proposals to pedestrianise the side lane to create space for outdoor terraces and bicycle parking.

Decorative lighting, outdoor seating and large screens for themed events are also part of the redesign. A handful of long-standing businesses have continued trading, but the new owner hopes to attract more tenants with affordable rents and modern facilities. Managers say the aim is to create a lively meeting place and entertainment hub for both residents and visitors before the summer season begins.
