The Guardia Civil have seized nearly 300 suspected counterfeit designer goods from a stall at the weekly market in Puerto de Mazarrón.
Officers from the Fiscal and Border Protection Unit carried out a routine preventive inspection last weekend when one stall attracted their attention due to unusually low prices. On closer examination, they found jewellery, watches and handbags allegedly imitating well-known brands, with irregular finishes and labelling that did not match genuine products.
In total, officers confiscated almost 300 pieces of jewellery, more than 50 watches and 20 luxury handbags. The items have an estimated market value of €116,000.
The stallholder is being investigated as the alleged perpetrator of an offence against industrial property. The Guardia Civil have reminded shoppers that if a designer item appears too good to be true at a fraction of the normal price, it probably is. The investigation remains ongoing.
