Los Alcázares will station lifeguards on two of its beaches during Holy Week for the first time, responding to rising visitor numbers outside the peak summer months. The council has confirmed that a full rescue operation will run from 28 March to 6 April, between 11am and 5pm, at Las Palmeras (Lima 3) and Manzanares (Lima 5) beaches.

The team will consist of four lifeguards, a captain, a coordinator and a jet ski, with dynamic patrol routes in place. The Municipal Emergency Service may also deploy its own vessel if required. The decision was agreed during a meeting of the Beach Management Body, where departments coordinated plans for the 2026 season.

Officials also discussed relocating one lifeguard station to improve visibility, following technical advice from emergency services. All first aid posts and watch chairs will be required to hold annual certification. Additional improvements planned this year include accessible footbaths with built-in showers, sand stockpiling and restoring the beach communication network.

Tourism and Beaches councillor María José Díaz said beach management is a year-round responsibility. She added that extending lifeguard cover beyond the summer months reflects changing tourism patterns, with more people choosing to visit the coastline throughout the year.
