Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport has opened Spain’s first Wetherspoon pub, marking the chain’s first location outside the United Kingdom and Ireland. The new venue began trading on Sunday and is located in the non-Schengen international departures area of the terminal.

The pub is operated by Lagardère Travel Retail and was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by company representatives, Wetherspoon executives and members of the airport’s commercial team. The opening was marked by a festive atmosphere and the venue’s first day of service to passengers.

The food and drink offer follows the traditional British pub style associated with Wetherspoon, including a full English breakfast, fish and chips, burgers and pizzas. The menu also features draught beer, a wide range of craft beers, wine and other drinks, alongside Spanish-inspired dishes such as tortilla de patata and gambas al ajillo.

Named Castell de Santa Bàrbara, after one of Alicante’s most recognisable landmarks, the pub covers more than 200 square metres and includes a covered terrace of over 30 square metres. The décor draws on Mediterranean influences linked to the Costa Blanca, and the opening expands the airport’s commercial offer for international travellers throughout the day.
