A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday when a rescue mission took place off the coast of Cartagena, Spain. A boat carrying eighteen migrants was discovered drifting approximately sixty miles from the shore. Unfortunately, one migrant was confirmed dead after falling into the sea. Emergency services were alerted by a merchant vessel that located the stricken craft.

Upon reaching the scene, rescue teams, including a helicopter and a fast boat from Salvamento Marítimo, were deployed. The survivors reported that their companion had fallen overboard, prompting a search operation that culminated in the recovery of the deceased.

The remaining seventeen migrants, including two minors, were safely rescued and taken to Santa Lucía port. There, they received medical attention from the Red Cross and were subsequently placed under the care of the National Police. They were later transferred to the Temporary Foreigners’ Care Centre in La Algameca Chica, also located in Cartagena.

The deceased migrant’s body has been sent to the Instituto de Medicina Legal for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by migrants attempting to cross perilous waters in search of safer lives.
