Amazon workers in Murcia are intensifying their strike, raising concerns about potential disruptions to deliveries during the crucial Black Friday and Christmas shopping periods. The strike, prompted by ongoing deteriorating working conditions and a perceived lack of resolution from the company, could severely impact operations in the Corvera logistics centre during peak demand times. Employees fear that their complaints, including wage issues and labour rights, are not being adequately addressed.

Rallied by various unions, including both the General Workers’ Confederation and the Union of Workers, nearly one thousand five hundred permanent and additional seasonal workers are participating in the strike. They have declared key strike periods from the twenty-fourth to the twenty-eighth of November and from the sixteenth to the twenty-third of December, coinciding with significant shopping activity.

Negotiations with Amazon’s management have so far proven unfruitful, with no compromises reached during mediation meetings. Workers are adamant about their demands, which include a real increase in base salaries, fair treatment regarding work rotas, improved health and safety measures, and accountability for workplace accidents. They express a sentiment that their grievances are shared across a significant portion of the workforce.

In response, Amazon maintains that its employees in Murcia are working in a modern and secure environment, offering competitive wages that, according to the company, exceed provincial collective agreements by nine percent. They assert that their wages start at one thousand four hundred and eighty-eight euros gross per month, coupled with substantial benefits. However, the workers remain firm in their demands for better working conditions as negotiations continue to stall.
