This morning, the Local Police’s Environmental Unit, along with the Vega Sur Fire Brigade in Torrevieja, conducted a rescue operation to free an alcaraván that had become trapped in separation nets at the municipal sports centre. This bird, native to Mediterranean ecosystems and classified as a protected species in the Valencia Community, was entangled and unable to free itself, leading to high stress levels and potential injury.

Quick coordination between officers and firefighters enabled an effective response, ensuring the safety of the animal during the operation. Once liberated, the alcaraván was taken to the municipal shelter, where it will remain under care until it can be transferred to the Santa Faz wildlife recovery centre.

Initial examinations suggest the bird may have sustained an injury to its left leg, and it will receive specialised veterinary attention to ensure its recovery. The Torrevieja City Council has highlighted the importance of cooperation between various emergency services and environmental protection agencies, acknowledging their efforts to preserve biodiversity and ensure coexistence between urban life and wildlife in the municipality.
