The regional government of Murcia recently published a resolution detailing the funding for high-voltage power line adaptations designed to protect avian species from collision and electrocution. A total of one million six hundred and forty-nine thousand one hundred and forty-seven euros has been allocated to private companies, representing ninety-eight per cent of the available budget, whilst two hundred thousand euros, fully allocated, has been granted to families and non-profit organisations. In total, ninety-eight beneficiaries qualify under the private sector initiative, alongside eight from the non-profit side, particularly comprising irrigation communities.

Beneficiaries now have ten calendar days to accept the funding, which has been promoted by the Ministry of Environment, Universities, Research and Mar Menor. This initiative is part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, supported by the European Union’s Next Generation funds. It allows individuals and legal entities to finance the necessary adaptations of their electrical installations to align with national and European species protection norms.

The regional government intends to leverage these resources to modernise infrastructure and enhance the coexistence between economic activities and biodiversity conservation. Priority will be given to projects that address the highest incidence of electrocutions and those situated in critical areas for endangered species. The funding aims to rectify hazardous power lines, specifically for threatened and protected avian species.

Eligible projects include structural corrections of supports, adjustments and replacements of cross-arms, installation of insulators, collision-deterrent devices, and enhanced visibility for cables. These financial aids will cover essential costs for adapting current facilities to meet regulatory standards, thereby contributing directly to European conservation goals while improving the safety and reliability of electrical supply.
