Santiago de la Ribera is set to see the construction of a new Aeronautical Culture Museum, featuring three retired Air Force planes along the Mar Menor. The ambitious project is spearheaded by the San Javier City Council and aims to create a cultural hub that celebrates and promotes Spanish military aviation, alongside boosting local tourism. With an investment of two million three hundred and twenty-six thousand euros, the museum will occupy a site covering five thousand square metres, generously provided by the Ministry of Defence.

The museum, designed by architect Salvador Griñán, will resemble a piece of origami, featuring extended wings over a glass façade. Planned facilities include gardens, a café with a terrace, exhibition areas, and spaces for the display of the decommissioned aircraft. The heritage of the former watchtower will also be preserved. Local officials anticipate the museum will attract visitors and enhance the identity of San Javier as an aeronautical hub.

Construction has already begun, and the project is expected to be completed in approximately sixteen months. Visitors will enjoy immersive experiences through virtual reality devices and dynamic exhibits. The new complex will also house the Tourism Office, alongside significant landscaped areas and necessary amenities for accessibility. A bridge will facilitate access to the museum, making it a communal space for both locals and tourists.

Additionally, the partnership between the San Javier City Council and the Ministry of Defence will allow the Air Force to utilise the museum for educational and outreach activities. The General Academy of Air and Space will supervise the content, while military personnel will engage in talks and exhibitions detailing the history of aviation. A dedicated merchandise point will also feature items related to the Águila Patrol, which celebrated its fortieth anniversary this year. The museum ultimately aims to become a key educational and cultural landmark, honouring Spain’s aeronautical legacy.
