The Cabo de Palos Lighthouse has been designated a Site of Cultural Interest, a move that has garnered criticism from the environmental group Ecologists in Action. They contend that this designation does not provide adequate protection and may even pave the way for commercial use of the iconic lighthouse, potentially allowing it to be transformed into a hotel. Ecologists in Action argues that guaranteed public access and respect for the lighthouse’s integrity are crucial elements of true preservation. As a result, they have filed an administrative appeal against its designation.

The appeal is part of the group’s ongoing efforts to defend the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse, which they describe as a public heritage site deeply rooted in community memory and situated within a unique natural space. In the past, there have been attempts to convert the lighthouse into a commercial entity; notably, the company Faros de Levante SL sought to open a hotel there in July 2017, but their request was denied due to the lighthouse’s active use.

Communal efforts to prevent privatisation have included demonstrations and petitions, with over five thousand signatures successfully blocking previous attempts to commercialise the lighthouse. Ecologists in Action acknowledge this victory but caution that the recent Royal Decree still permits hotel activity on and around the site, which they believe undermines genuine conservation efforts.

The group emphasises the importance of transforming the lighthouse into a space for public use, such as an interpretation centre or museum, rather than allowing its use to be determined by private enterprise. Furthermore, protecting the surrounding environment is highlighted as critical, given its rich biodiversity, which includes endangered species. Residents and local advocates stress the necessity of communities working together to ensure that heritage sites remain public and accessible for all citizens, rather than becoming exclusive commercial ventures.
