The construction of the new local police station in the Los Dolores neighbourhood of Cartagena has commenced, as announced by the town hall on Tuesday. The project comes with a budget of nearly six hundred thousand euros and a scheduled duration of ten months, with hopes for the station to open in the coming year. The single-storey building will occupy three hundred square metres and is located on municipal land between La Vía and Río Narcea streets, adjacent to a nearby parking facility.

According to the Councillor for Security, José Ramón Llorca, the site is already fenced and prepared for construction work, which has begun in earnest. Llorca stated, “We have already started work on the future police station of Los Dolores.” He further mentioned that this construction marks the beginning of a significant upgrade in the local policing infrastructure, coinciding with the conclusion of the Cuesta Blanca station project, which is in the final stages of preparation for service.

The construction contract was awarded to two local firms, Jumabeda and Talnamadi, following a public tender in February and a successful bidding process in April. Besides the central facilities located in the Safety Park, the local police already maintains a presence in various areas, such as Pozo Estrecho, El Algar, and Cabo de Palos, and has previously operated within existing facilities in Los Dolores.

The new establishments in Los Dolores and Cuesta Blanca are part of the town hall’s Comprehensive Security Plan. Councillor Llorca celebrated these developments, which not only include new police stations but also the enhancement of staff numbers, improvement of vehicles and equipment, and the establishment of specialised units. Additionally, the local government is strengthening video surveillance measures with wireless IP cameras to monitor neighbourhoods, as residents in La Aljorra have expressed concerns regarding limited police presence, increasing calls for a police station in their area due to recent crime incidents.
