A stunning meteor explosion illuminated the night sky over eastern Spain on Friday, the 8th of August, two thousand and twenty-five. The event was caused by a meteor originating from the Perseids, which are expected to reach their peak activity on the 12th and 13th of August. The meteor was first reported at twenty-one fifty-five, travelling at a remarkable speed of approximately two hundred and seventeen thousand kilometres per hour before disintegrating.

According to the Astrohita Foundation, the fireball began its descent from an altitude of around one hundred and sixteen kilometres over Jarafuel in Valencia. It then moved in a south-westerly direction, soaring over the province of Albacete before ultimately exploding at an altitude of roughly eighty-six kilometres near the town of Los Arejos, within the municipality of Águilas.

Thanks to its immense brightness, the meteor was observable from more than six hundred kilometres away. It is reported that the fireball travelled a total distance of approximately one hundred and eighty-two kilometres in the atmosphere before fully disintegrating, meaning no fragments landed on the earth’s surface.

This event has been classified as a grazing fireball, created when a rock enters the atmosphere at a shallow angle, following a nearly parallel trajectory to the ground. The rock was identified as coming from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, and due to its larger size compared to the usual sand-sized Perseid particles, it produced a spectacular display that can be classified as a bolide or fireball.
