The Ayuntamiento de Almoradí has sent a letter to the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura requesting the return of responsibility for cleaning local riverbeds and ravines. This action aims to prevent flooding and mitigate the impact of heavy autumn rains. The cleaning involves the removal of invasive vegetation and organic waste that obstruct water flow. Each year, the local council pushes for these measures, especially in light of the lingering effects of the significant flooding in September two thousand nineteen.

Mayor María Gómez has emphasised the importance of compliance by the Confederación, expressing frustration over the lack of response to prior requests. She pointed out that the damages from the two thousand nineteen floods should not be repeated due to inadequate preventive measures. During those floods, several riverbanks collapsed, leading to extensive flooding across thousands of hectares of agricultural land and urban areas.

Furthermore, the Ayuntamiento is undertaking essential works as part of its Municipal Flood Risk Action Plan. The local government has criticized previous responses from the Confederación, which have been vague and lacking specific timelines or areas marked for cleaning. This has heightened concerns among residents as the rainy season approaches.

The municipality is also conducting cleaning operations for drainage systems and street gutters, particularly in industrial zones and other areas prone to flooding. The Ayuntamiento stresses that preventive maintenance cannot wait for impending rains and requires prompt institutional collaboration to safeguard citizens against increasingly severe weather events.
