Issam B., a nineteen-year-old man detained on the fourteenth of July in the Basque Country for an assault reportedly linked to extensive unrest in Torre Pacheco, has been released from Martutene Prison. The Fifth Instruction Court in Donostia, which previously ordered his remand, notified him of his release last Friday, albeit under several conditions. The Public Prosecutor, the only party pressing charges, did not request the continuation of his provisional imprisonment following his arrest.

Upon his release, Issam must present himself weekly before the court in San Sebastián, having provided proof of residence in the area. He is prohibited from contacting the victim or departing the country, with his passport handed over to the authorities earlier this week. Two other individuals arrested during the incident have also been released on similar preventive measures by the magistrate in San Javier shortly after their arrests.

Issam had been detained by the Ertzaintza on the fourteenth of July, while attempting to catch a train to Irun, presumably heading towards France. Following his detention, he appeared before a judge the next day, who then ordered his incarceration. During his three weeks in custody, Issam had an expedited trial on the twenty-ninth of July regarding a separate incident of theft, which involved him wrestling with an elderly man as he attempted to steal a watch.

The spokesperson for the Popular Party in the Region of Murcia, Miriam Guardiola, has since called for urgent tightening of the laws to prevent similar occurrences involving repeat offenders. She stated that allowing someone with a prior record to be released without consequence is a humiliation for victims and poses a threat to the public, advocating for the need for strict reforms in the legal system under the current government.
