Beaches along La Manga del Mar Menor are currently closed due to a sewage spill from a ship that occurred on Monday, July twenty-first. Authorities raised red flags along the shoreline, prohibiting swimming while health and environmental officials evaluate the contamination levels in the water. The local sewage system remains completely operational and has not contributed to the incident.

Less than twenty-four hours prior to the spill, a separate incident involving a boat’s propeller left a nine-year-old boy in intensive care, prompting heightened vigilance in the area. Swimmers were directed to exit the contaminated waters immediately, with further access to the affected beaches restricted by lifeguards.

The spill has created a visible “brown cloud” in the water, alarming locals and visitors alike. The San Javier Town Hall has reported the situation to the regional ministry for Public Health, which will conduct analyses of the water quality to determine when it can be declared safe for swimming again.

Although it is unclear when the beaches will reopen, local officials are committed to restoring access promptly. The origins of the vessel responsible for the spill have not been disclosed and may be subject to investigation based on the findings of the environmental assessment.
