A fire broke out on Saturday evening at the abandoned mud spa located in the Torrevieja Natural Park, near the residential area of Torreta III. Firefighters, alongside local police and the Civil Guard, responded promptly, managing to extinguish the flames by ten o’clock. The blaze affected various types of vegetation surrounding the salt lagoon, with powerful winds facilitating the fire’s spread while also pushing it away from populated areas.

Thick smoke plumed from the site, visible from several kilometres away including neighbouring municipalities like San Miguel de Salinas and Los Montesinos. Reports indicate that the fire originated near the structure of the spa known as La Caracola, which has remained uncompleted since its construction was halted over fifteen years ago.

Despite the significant investment from the local council, exceeding one million euros, construction was carried out without the necessary coastal authorisations. The site has suffered several serious fires over the years, and the deteriorating structure has become a target for vandalism, attracting groups of young people and curious visitors.

As the area remains a popular urban ruin from the architectural boom of the early two thousand’s, its condition continues to raise concerns among local residents and authorities. The latest incident adds to the ongoing challenges of managing and securing this abandoned structure within a protected natural environment.
