A man has been left with serious injuries following a dramatic car accident while fleeing from the local police in San Miguel de Salinas. This incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, around four AM, immediately after the suspect stole a tobacco vending machine from a petrol station. As he sped away in his car, a local police patrol pursued him along the Campoamor road.

The driver lost control of the vehicle, careening off into a service canal. The car was found submerged in the canal, with its lights still on. Local police immediately called for assistance, and the Torrevieja firefighting team arrived on the scene to ensure there were no additional occupants inside the vehicle.

Firefighters skillfully worked to secure the car for extraction, confirming that there was only one occupant, who was swiftly transported to Torrevieja University Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. Fortunately, the stolen vending machine was recovered by the authorities, though the driver’s escape attempt ended in a serious crash.

Authorities, including the Guardia Civil, are conducting an investigation to determine whether anyone else was involved in the robbery. The canal is currently at maximum capacity, presenting significant water flow which complicates any potential escape attempts, as highlighted by the recent events.
