The Comunitat Valenciana recorded 25 road deaths during July and August 2026, 12 more than during the same period last year. That represents a 92.3% increase, the largest rise in absolute terms among Spain’s autonomous communities. The Directorate-General for Traffic did not provide a separate figure for Castellón, so the number of deaths on roads in the province is unknown.

Across Spain, 218 fatal road crashes caused 240 deaths during the two summer months, while 926 people needed hospital treatment. Deaths rose by 4%, although hospitalisations fell by 10%. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska described it as a bad summer, with an average of four deaths a day.

Wildfires led to 2,640 kilometres of road closures across 227 routes. Castellón was among the areas requiring special traffic measures, alongside Ávila, Madrid, Huelva and Huesca. Traffic officers carried out 451 road closures and 376 access-control operations, supported by 1,599 officers.

There were 92 deaths among vulnerable road users, including 54 motorcyclists, 26 pedestrians and 12 cyclists. Conventional roads accounted for 175 deaths, or 73% of the total. Overall, 734 people have died on Spanish roads so far this year, 16 fewer than by the end of August 2025.
