Extreme heat has been linked to 225 deaths in the Valencian Community during August, according to estimates from the Daily Mortality Monitoring System, known as MoMo, run by Spain’s Carlos III Health Institute. Since summer began on 21 June, the system has attributed 517 deaths to high temperatures in the region.

July recorded 235 heat-related deaths, 11 more than in the same month last year. August’s total was 225, which was 25 higher than in August 2025. The deadliest week of the summer was 6 to 12 July, when 104 deaths were recorded. The second deadliest was 17 to 23 August, with 100 deaths.

Of the August deaths, 100 occurred in Alicante province, 65 in Castellón and 60 in Valencia. The victims included 116 men and 109 women, while most were aged over 65. The highest daily total this summer was recorded on 10 July, with 22 deaths.

Between 21 June and 30 August last year, MoMo recorded 385 heat-related deaths in the Valencian Community. The 517 deaths recorded over the same period this year represent an increase of 132.
