The beaches at La Glea and Aguamarina in Orihuela have reopened after new tests confirmed that water quality is within the limits set by health and environmental authorities.
The beaches closed temporarily on Tuesday after samples found elevated levels of microbiological indicators. One indicator was more than twice the maximum permitted level. The closure remained in place for around 24 hours as a precaution to protect public health.
Orihuela’s Coastal Council has thanked residents and visitors for their understanding and cooperation. However, it has not confirmed whether it has identified the source of the suspected sewage pollution, despite saying when the closure was announced that it would investigate the cause.
The closures were among three beach pollution incidents reported in the Vega Baja this summer. Previous cases affected the natural pools at Juan Aparicio seafront in Torrevieja and Puerto beach in Pilar de la Horadada.
