The State Meteorological Agency, known as AEMET, has issued an orange heat warning for the southern coast of Alicante, including Torrevieja, on Wednesday 19 August. The warning will be in force from 13:00 to 20:59, with temperatures expected to reach 40°C. Orange level means there is a significant danger from the heat.

Torrevieja Town Council has urged residents, visitors and tourists to drink water regularly, avoid alcohol and limit direct sun exposure during the hottest part of the day. People outdoors should wear light, loose clothing, use sun protection and stay in cool or shaded places where possible. Strenuous exercise, sports and prolonged outdoor work should also be avoided or adapted, with regular breaks and frequent hydration.

Older people, babies and children, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses, disabilities or care needs, and those working outdoors may be particularly vulnerable. Relatives, neighbours and carers are being asked to check regularly on vulnerable people, especially those living alone. Medication should not be changed or stopped without medical advice.

The council has reminded people never to leave children, vulnerable adults or animals in a parked vehicle, even briefly. Anyone suffering dizziness, severe headache, weakness, nausea, confusion, very hot skin, convulsions or loss of consciousness should be moved to a cool place and given urgent help by calling 112. Residents should follow updates from AEMET and the Valencian Community’s 112 service.
