A man has died after falling from an electric scooter in Torrevieja. The crash happened at about 8.30pm on 8 August, at the junction of San José Street and Rambla Juan Mateo in the Calvario district. Police sources confirmed details of the incident on Wednesday.

The victim was a Colombian national born in 1985. Police believe he was under the influence of alcohol, travelling in the wrong direction and not wearing a helmet. Witnesses said he lost his balance while travelling at speed, hitting either the kerb or the steps outside a nearby bar before striking the road. He suffered fatal head injuries.

An emergency medical team pronounced him dead at the scene. The death was recorded as a judicial death, a term used for sudden, accidental or otherwise suspicious deaths that require judicial procedures. The body was taken directly to a funeral parlour.

Torrevieja Local Police have increased checks on personal mobility vehicles since the start of 2026. These vehicles must now be registered with Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic, display identification and have third-party insurance. Drivers must not use alcohol or drugs, mobile phones or headphones, and must not ride on pavements. Only one person is allowed, with a maximum speed of 25 km/h. Compulsory helmet use will begin in October.
