A new secondary school has been approved for Torrevieja in response to a sharp rise in pupil numbers. The regional government has created IES Eras de la Sal by transforming the existing secondary section of IES Torrevigía into an independent centre with full organisational and management autonomy.

The school will begin the 2026/2027 academic year with 22 ESO units and two Bachillerato units. Once its permanent building is completed, it will offer 32 units in total – 24 ESO and eight Bachillerato – with capacity for up to 1,000 pupils.

Mayor Eduardo Dolón has described the decision as fundamental to meeting what he called the town’s extraordinary educational growth. Torrevieja has grown from 10,597 pupils in 2019 to more than 17,000, making it one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the Valencian Community.

The new institute will involve an investment of 722,937.76 euros across 2026 and 2027 to cover staffing and running costs. Over the past three academic years, four new public schools have joined Torrevieja’s education network, including three primary schools and now IES Eras de la Sal.
