Torrevieja’s new urban transport network began operating on Monday, six years after it was first announced, but the launch has been marked by confusion and criticism. Although additional lines and improved frequencies have been introduced, there are still no new buses in service and many new stops are only marked on the ground, without clear signage.

Passengers have reported uncertainty about routes and ticketing, with many asking drivers for guidance. Some previously direct journeys now require changes. On Line 1, for example, travellers from Rocío del Mar to the town centre must change at the University Hospital and pay two separate fares of 1.65 euros, unless they have a travel pass. Not all buses are yet equipped to sell these passes.

Free travel for registered residents using the municipal travel card will remain in place until October. After that, around 80% of users are expected to lose the free service, with the standard single fare rising from 1.35 to 1.65 euros. Real-time digital timetable information is not yet available.

The new network includes eight lines, among them a circular C line serving key central locations, as well as routes linking the hospital, La Mata, Los Balcones, San Luis and local shopping centres. While many residents say they are willing to pay more for a better service, it remains to be seen whether the changes will meet expectations.
