Cartagena City Council has completed a full renewal of the vegetation on the pergolas at the Port of Cartagena, with the planting of more than 600 new specimens. The work was carried out by the municipal Parks and Gardens service as part of efforts to enhance one of the city’s most heavily used public spaces.

The project included the planting of Incienso variegata and Russelia equisetiformis, commonly known as Cupid’s tears. Both species were selected for their resistance to high temperatures, their ability to thrive in areas with strong sun exposure, and their trailing growth, which improves the visual appeal of the pergolas.

In addition to the new planting, the irrigation system has been reinforced with twice as many supply lines. The improvement is designed to ensure healthy growth and make ongoing maintenance more efficient.

The council said the initiative reflects its commitment to maintaining and improving public spaces, creating cleaner, more sustainable and welcoming surroundings for residents and visitors alike.
