Torrevieja City Council has given initial approval to a Special Cemetery Plan designed to guarantee burial capacity for the next 20 years. The plan sets aside 16,834 square metres of land near the N-332, in an area already used for public and industrial facilities. Councillor for Cemeteries Sandra Sánchez said the expansion responds to population growth and current space limitations.

Of the total area, 7,187 square metres will be used to extend the municipal cemetery, while 2,603 square metres will be allocated for roads and parking. A further 7,009 square metres will be reserved for complementary private funerary facilities. The expansion represents an increase of between 20% and 25% of the cemetery’s current surface area.

The development will include paving, pavements, lighting, drainage, water supply and fire protection systems. The land will remain classified as ordinary non-developable under the town’s General Urban Development Plan, which allows public facilities such as cemeteries where justified.

The project has received a favourable environmental assessment and no objections were lodged during public consultation. Since 2022, the council has added or begun construction of 756 new niches, but officials say longer-term planning is needed. The proposal will now be sent to the relevant regional authority for final approval.
