A minor earthquake measuring 1.8 was recorded near Torrevieja at 7.09am on Tuesday, according to Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN). The epicentre was located in the salt lagoon area southeast of Los Montesinos, at a depth of 5 kilometres.

Local weather and environmental group Proyecto Mastral said the tremor was felt lightly by some residents. However, there have been no reports of injuries or material damage. Quakes of this magnitude are often experienced as a slight vibration, particularly by people close to the epicentre or at rest at the time.

The tremor forms part of a short series of low-magnitude movements detected in recent hours in Alicante province and the nearby Mediterranean. In the early hours of Monday, a 1.9 magnitude quake was recorded west of Elche at a depth of 5 kilometres, with a maximum intensity of II. Later that evening, at 8.26pm, a 1.8 magnitude tremor was detected offshore between Alicante and Benidorm.

The Vega Baja region frequently experiences minor seismic activity. Most tremors are weak and do not cause damage, although they can be felt when they occur close to populated areas or at shallow depths.
