A wildfire affected a pine woodland area close to homes in Villamartín, Orihuela Costa, on Sunday evening. The blaze started near Antillas and Wagner streets, in an area where housing developments sit alongside pine trees and dry scrubland, close to the Villamartín golf course.

The Provincial Fire Consortium confirmed that four Generalitat forest crews and five consortium units were deployed to tackle the flames. According to Orihuela City Council’s governing team, the fire was brought under control and was almost fully extinguished by 10.30pm.

Some residents chose to leave their properties voluntarily as a precaution. Flames reportedly reached several metres in height, fuelled by dry vegetation and the close proximity of woodland to housing.

Similar incidents have occurred in recent springs and summers along the Orihuela coastline. Many undeveloped plots, including protected forest land and areas linked to dry riverbeds, lie between residential sectors, increasing the risk of fast-spreading fires during hot weather.
