Twenty-four migrants, including four minors, have been assisted in separate incidents off the coast of Alicante province.
In the most recent case, a merchant vessel named Grande Detroit spotted a small boat around 68 miles east of Torrevieja on Tuesday. After receiving the alert, Valencia’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre deployed the Salvamar Leo, which rescued 14 people – 12 men, one woman and one child – and brought them safely to Torrevieja port.
In a separate incident on Sunday afternoon, ten people of Algerian origin arrived in Santa Pola. The group included six adult men, one adult woman and three minors. Some were reported to have cuts to their legs.
They were later transferred to Alicante port for medical checks and immigration procedures. National Police have arrested two people suspected of acting as the boat’s skippers and facilitating illegal immigration.
