The council has lost a European Union grant worth 436,875 euros after the regional government declined to extend the deadline for delivering new brown bio-waste containers.
As a result, the local authority has been forced to shelve an ongoing tender valued at 436,375 euros for the supply of around 6,000 containers. The bins formed a key part of plans to introduce separate bio-waste collection across the municipality.
The deadline for receiving the containers had been set for 31 May 2026. However, delays in launching and processing the procurement left the council facing a race against time to complete the contract.
With the extension refused, the funding has now been lost, dealing a significant setback to the roll-out of the brown bin scheme.
