A video recorded off the coast of Torrevieja has triggered anger on social media after showing a jet ski operating close to a group of dolphins. The footage, posted on Instagram, captures the watercraft manoeuvring near the animals in the Calas area, close to the town’s harbour.

The person who filmed the scene said what began as a special sighting turned into a “sad” episode. In the recording, he claims the jet ski riders did not simply observe the dolphins, but allegedly approached, crossed their path and followed them at close range.

He also reminded viewers of basic guidance when encountering cetaceans at sea: boats should keep a safe distance, avoid chasing or surrounding the animals, reduce speed and, where appropriate, place the engine in neutral. Marine experts warn that getting too close can cause stress, disrupt movement, separate individuals from the group and increase the risk of collision.

The incident has also reignited debate about the use of jet skis in coastal areas popular with swimmers and wildlife. Critics argue that nautical leisure must be balanced with safety, environmental protection and respect for others enjoying the sea from the shore.
