The beaches of Águilas will implement new facilities aimed at improving accessibility for all visitors this summer. Councillor for Tourism and Inclusion, José Antonio Consentino, made the announcement on Wednesday, outlining plans to introduce specialised amphibious wheelchairs and flexible walkways. These additions are intended to provide enhanced access to the beach and water for individuals with reduced mobility.

The local council has acquired eight amphibious crutches in various sizes, crafted from durable materials such as aluminium and rubber. Consentino explained that these designs not only ensure floatation but also provide stable support for users on the sand. In addition, six amphibious wheelchairs will be available, allowing users weighing between twenty-five and one hundred and thirty kilograms to reach the water independently.

These wheelchairs feature low-pressure wheels for improved stability both on sand and in water. Each unit includes a flotation device and a rudder, enhancing user safety and mobility. Furthermore, thirteen flexible walkways have been designed to enable people with reduced mobility access various terrains with ease.

Constructed with a non-slip surface, these environmentally friendly walkways are fully recyclable and feature white bands to improve visibility for individuals with impaired sight. This initiative underscores the commitment of the Águilas council to promote inclusion and accessibility for all beachgoers.
