The Town Hall of Orihuela has announced plans to distribute seven hundred fifty-eight new waste bins throughout the municipality, beginning this June. The new bins include four hundred thirty-two units specifically for recycling materials, such as containers and paper, and three hundred twenty-six units for general waste. This effort is part of a larger initiative to improve selective waste collection and achieve compliance with environmental standards.

Rocío Ortuño, the councillor for Urban Solid Waste, noted that this renewal aligns with the new objectives set by both national legislation and the local Waste Plan. She stated that the changes represent a significant step towards a cleaner and more efficient waste collection system focused on recycling.

The project was tendered in November and awarded at a cost of six hundred ninety thousand euros. Each new bin will feature identifying vinyl labels in Spanish and the emblem of the Town Hall.

In addition to the initial distribution, a second batch of bins for rear-loading will be finalised soon, valued at one hundred ten thousand euros. This includes eight hundred seventy-seven units expected to arrive by late June or early July. However, local residents’ association, Unidos por la Costa, has expressed concerns over the number of bins allocated to coastal areas, predicting ongoing shortages during the busy summer period.
